  3.    Asteroids are small planetary bodies revolving around the sun, located
  4. between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Their obits around the Sun average
  5. about 4.6 years. The largest eliptical orbit is Hidalgo (944), which has
  6. an orbit of 13.71 years. The shortest is Icarus (1566), which has an orbit
  7. of only 408 days. The only asteroid sometimes visable with the naked eye
  8. is Vesta. The asteroids Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta contain more than
  9. half the total mass of the asteroid belt. There are about 20 Asteroids
  10. larger than 100 miles in diameter. Ceres, the largest, is about 480 miles
  11. (772 km.) in diameter.  About 30,000 are known and some 1700 have been
  12. studied.

  14.    The origin of the Asteroids is unknown. Some theories account for the
  15. Asteroids via a catastrophic collision of small planets. The collisions
  16. are believed to have occured as recently as a 100 million years ago. This
  17. is supported by estimated ages of many Earth meteor craters.
